Joseph and Joseph: 5 Parallels

In this post I’d like to draw your attention to 5 parallels between Joseph in the OT and Joseph in the new. Cool?

1. Both Share the Same Name

Okay, that one was kind of obvious.

“Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit.” – Matthew 1:18

“And she called his name Joseph, saying, “May the LORD add to me another son!” – Genesis 30:24

2. Both have Fathers Named Jacob

“And Leah conceived again, and she bore Jacob a sixth son.” – Gen. 30:19

“And Jacob the father of Joesph the husband of Mary.” – Matt. 1:16

3. God Spoke to both through Dreams

“Now Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers they only hated him the more.” – Gen. 37:5

“But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream.” – Matt. 1:20

4. Both were Righteous and Chaste

The whole episode of Joseph’s master attempting to seduce Joseph (too long to recount here). – Gen. 39:7-18

“And her husband Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to send her away quietly.” – Matt. 1:19

5. Both Saved their Families by bringing them to Egypt

“‘Do this: take wagons from the land of Egypt for your little ones and for your wives, and bring your father, and come. Give no thought to your goods, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours.'” – Gen. 45:19-20

“Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there till I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” – Matt. 2:13
